English as a Second Language (ESL)

English as a Second Language subjects address the needs of students seeking to consolidate their English language and communication skills. Study in this area is strategically oriented to the refinement of student skills within an academic environment.

English as a Second Language subjects for undergraduates are designed for non-native speakers seeking to consolidate their academic and English language skills. Emphasis is placed on reading, listening, effective writing (using a range of sources) and improved fluency and organisation of oral presentations. Students from all faculties may enrol.

175-120 - Academic English 1

Semesters 1 and 2
Develop English language & academic skills needed for university study. The primary focus id on academic writing for essays and reports. the subject also develops your reading strategies and analysis of texts, critical thinking, group discussions and examination techniques. Content covers topics relating to the history of migration and current issues in Australia's migration program.

175-121 - Academic English 2

Semesters 1 and 2
For students with higher ESL scores.
Develop your academic skills in oral, written and electronic forms of communication through study of current issues in Australian society. The focus is on researching topics, critically analysing a range of academic texts and synthesising material to produce oral presentations and written papers that are fluent, well-organised and effectively expressed.

175-125 - Academic English for Economics and Commerce

Semester 1
Content comes from macroeconomics topics, which are used to develop your ability to speak appropriately in academic settings, communicate as part of a team, read economics and commerce texts critically, take notes and write assignments fluently and accurately.

175-501 - Presenting Academic Discourse

Semesters 1 and 2
For Postgraduates enrolled in research only and coursework programs. You will critically analyse and present academic content from your own discipline in both written and oral formats. Attention is paid to grammatical aspects of your written and spoken academic discourse, and to a critical approach to literature in your field of study. There are separate streams for General and Engineering.
